Dedicated Supply Advantage
TerraCair Ultrapure - Dedicated Automotive Grade Urea
Urea is a main component in the production of Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
Urea is also a feedstock for many other chemicals including, but not limited to, hand cream, ice melt, and fertilizer (nearly 90% of worldwide urea capacity goes into fertilizer). Urea is a constituent of cattle feeds, and is a useful viscosity modifier for casein or starch-based paper coatings. Small quantities are used as an intermediate in the manufacturing of polyurethanes, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste, cosmetics, flame-proofing agents, sulphamic acid and fabric softeners.
The worldwide demand for urea is increasing every year. According to a paper published by OPIS, "worldwide urea production is about 140 million metric tons, representing growth of about 40 million metric tons in the past 10 years. However, North American urea production is below demand and imports must be brought in from the rest of the world."
What could this mean for the Diesel Exhaust Fluid supply?
1. Not all urea meets the strict ISO 22241 specifications to qualify as automotive grade DEF. TerraCair® Ultrapure is produced from US & Canadian urea and is certified by the American Petroleum Institute.
2. The availability of Diesel Exhaust Fluid is crucial due to the 2010 EPA Diesel Emission Standards mandate requiring SCR systems to have an electronic monitoring system on DEF tanks - No Urea, No DEF.
3. Many Diesel Exhaust Fluid suppliers rely on imported urea for production. As developing economies rely on urea as a fertilizer for crops, imported urea supply can become tight.
4. CF Industries, Terra Environmental Technologies parent company, is the #1 Nitrogen producer in North America. CF has dedicated capacity in their production for Automotive Grade Urea.
