Diesel Exhaust Fluid Safety


Diesel Exhaust Fluid is classified as a non-hazardous material and should be handled with the following tips in mind.

DEF Don'ts

  • When filling vehicle tanks with DEF at service stations, there is no requirement to wear protective clothing.
  • Do not keep DEF in the sunlight or in temperatures higher than 86 degrees Fahrenheit
  • In case of contact with the eyes, flush with cool water.  Remove contact lenses, if applicable, and continue flushing.
  • If DEF is spilt on clothing, please remove and wash in a separate load.
  • In case of contact with the skin, flush with cool water.  Wash with soap and water.
  • DEF should never be swallowed.  If so, do not induce vomiting.  Rinse mouth with water, then drink one to two glasses of water.
  • In case of fire, DEF containers must cooled by spraying with water.  After fire, the contents of a DEF container must be disposed.
  • Spilt DEF should be cleaned up as soon as possible;  DEF can be harmful to concrete and masonry.
 
  • DEF should be properly disposed of as waste and should not be poured down standard drains.
